Meerkat Makeover!
With
the help of friends, the Staten Island Zoo
has
undertaken to make over
our meerkat home.
Meerkat
Habitat Project
The
objective of the project is an improved habitat for
our beautiful meerkats, complete with deep sandy soil suitable
for burrow digging, glass walls so our visitors can
get up close and personal with our meerkats, and with
variety of
enrichment activities so the meerkats can display their fascinating
cooperative behavior.
The East Coast
Meerkat Society (www.meerkatsrule.org) has offered to
help the zoo raise the funds to rebuild our meerkat enclosure. This
volunteer group, formed by people
from all walks of life with an intense interest in
meerkats, works to improve the lives of meerkats in zoos and
the researchers who
study these animals in their home in the Kalahari Desert, Africa,
and
to promote conservation for meerkats in the wild.
They have
raised one-third of the funds needed, and are partnering with
the zoo for this fund-raising
drive.
Our
Partnership
The Staten
Island Zoo curators, keepers, zoologists and architects are
working with the East Coast Meerkat Society volunteers to
develop a new enrichment-based environment for the meerkat exhibit
where
visitors will be able to observe the fascinating, communal, cooperative
behavior of meerkats at close range.
We ask for
your donation to assist in giving our wonderful meerkats a better place
to live.
